Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest cost, especially on the Caribbean coast, where Tulum beach hotels cost several times more than rooms in town; in Mexico City, Roma and Condesa are pricier than the Centro. Domestic flights between Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán add a few thousand pesos. Archaeological sites are cheap in the centre and south but more expensive in Quintana Roo and Yucatán because of state fees, and cenotes charge MX$150-500 each. Street food is very cheap everywhere.
When it is cheaper
Prices are lowest from late April to June and September to mid-November, outside Easter, the summer holidays and Christmas; Caribbean resort rates drop most, often by a third or more. Día de Muertos in Oaxaca and the Christmas-New Year fortnight are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Eat at street stands and markets, where tacos and tlayudas cost a fraction of restaurant prices.
- Use Uber or DiDi in Mexico City instead of street taxis.
- Look for 'comida corrida' set lunches, about MX$100-180 for several courses.
- Stay in Tulum town rather than on the beach strip, which costs about half as much.
- Use ADO first-class buses between cities in the Yucatán; they are comfortable and cheap.
- Visit Mexico City's many free or cheap museums, some free on Sundays for residents only, so check the rules.
