Is Meteora expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Meteora is inexpensive by Greek standards: a budget day is about €75 per person and a mid-range day about €150, before the train or drive from Athens. Monastery tickets are cheap, and rooms and tavernas in Kalambaka and Kastraki cost far less than on the islands.

Where the money goes
The main cost is getting there: the train from Athens takes about 4–5 hours, and driving means car hire, fuel and tolls over about 350 km. On site, beds take the biggest share: Kalambaka rooms cost about €50–80 a double, Kastraki guesthouses under the rocks €80–130 and boutique stone hotels €150–300, plus the climate resilience fee. Guided tours (sunset or hiking) are the main sightseeing expense; six monasteries at about €5 each add up to only about €30. Food in tavernas is good value.
When it is cheaper
From November to March (outside Christmas and Easter weekends) rooms are often cheaper by roughly 20–40%; July and August are not the most expensive months here, as many visitors come in spring and autumn.
How to spend less
- Stay at least one night: day trips from Athens add up to 9–10 hours of travel and a rushed visit.
- Choose two or three monasteries that suit your interests rather than paying for all six.
- Walk the old monks' paths from Kastraki or Kalambaka instead of taking taxis between monasteries.
- Use the local bus from Kalambaka up to the monasteries, which runs a few times a day.
- Eat in Kalambaka's tavernas away from the main road through town.
- Book train tickets from Athens early for the best fares.
