Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest cost, and restored colonial houses with pools in the Centro cost more than hostels. Day trips are next: Uxmal, Chichén Itzá and the cenotes involve entry fees (archaeological sites charge a state fee on top of the federal ticket) plus a car, bus or tour. Food is cheap at markets and loncherías and moderate in restaurants. City transport is inexpensive. Yucatán adds a lodging tax of a few percent to hotel bills.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are usually cheaper in the hot, rainy months from about May to October, while December to March and Easter week are the busiest and most expensive periods.
How to spend less
- Eat lunch at the Mercado Lucas de Gálvez rather than in restaurants.
- Use Uber or Didi instead of street taxis.
- Take ADO buses to Uxmal or Chichén Itzá instead of a tour.
- Share a cart at Cuzamá with up to four people.
- Visit the free museums and murals in the Centro.
