Is Mani expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
The Mani is fairly good value by Greek standards: cheaper than the islands, similar to other parts of the Peloponnese. Expect about €80 a day per person on a tight budget, about €145 mid-range and €270 or more for comfort. A hire car is unavoidable, and restored tower guesthouses are the main splurge.

Where the money goes
The two big costs are the room and the car. Rooms in Stoupa and Gythio start at about €50–85 a night, villages such as Kardamyli and Areopoli are about €80–150, and restored stone towers in Vathia, Gerolimenas or Limeni run €150–300. Because buses are rare, almost everyone hires a car, and the winding roads use more fuel and time than the map suggests. Food is reasonable — a taverna meal with wine is about €15–25 per person — unless you order fish by the kilo. Sights cost little: the main paid visit is the Diros Caves.
When it is cheaper
Prices are usually lower in April–May and late September–October than in July and August. In winter many guesthouses close, but those that stay open are often cheaper.
How to spend less
- Split your stay between a northern base (Kardamyli or Stoupa) and a southern one (Areopoli or Gerolimenas) to save hours of driving and fuel.
- Arrive at the Diros Caves at opening time to avoid long queues in summer.
- Fly into Kalamata rather than driving from Athens if fares are low; it is about 45 minutes from Kardamyli.
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fish in Limeni, Gerolimenas or Gythio.
- Buy thyme honey, olives and pasteli in village shops in Areopoli rather than at airport shops.
- Bring your own water and snacks for walks; there are few shops on the paths.
