Is Manchester expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Manchester is mid-priced for the UK: much cheaper than London, a little dearer than Liverpool or Leeds. A budget day is about £80 per person and a mid-range day about £173. Hotels and eating and drinking out take most of the money; the major museums are free, and football is the big optional extra.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest cost, rising sharply on football weekends, big concert nights at the Co-op Live and AO Arena, and graduation weeks; city-centre hotels add a £1 per room per night visitor charge. Eating out is good value at the Curry Mile and Chinatown and more expensive in Ancoats, Spinningfields and the Northern Quarter. Most big museums are free, so the main paid sights are stadium tours and gigs. Premier League tickets are hard to get and mostly sold to members.
When it is cheaper
January to March and midweek in summer are usually cheapest. Hotel prices often double on match weekends, so check the fixture list before booking.
How to spend less
- Plan around the free museums: Science and Industry, Manchester Museum, the Whitworth, Manchester Art Gallery, the John Rylands Library and IWM North.
- Use Bee Network buses, where single fares are capped at a low flat price (about £2, check current fare), or a Metrolink day travelcard for multiple tram trips.
- Eat at the Curry Mile in Rusholme or in Chinatown for cheap, filling meals.
- Look up hotel prices against football fixtures and concert dates before booking.
- Book stadium tours online in advance for the best price.
- Take the train to the Peak District (Edale, about 50 minutes) for a free day of walking.
