Is Langkawi expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Langkawi is good value by international standards and cheaper than Phuket or Bali's resort zones, especially because the island is duty-free. A budget traveller can manage on about RM 170 (roughly €35) per person a day sharing a room, mid-range about RM 460 and comfort about RM 1,600. Where the money goes
Accommodation varies enormously, from RM 100-200 guesthouses on Pantai Cenang to RM 1,200-3,500 rainforest resorts at Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu. Activities are the next big item: the SkyCab, Kilim boat trips and island hopping together can cost several hundred ringgit. Transport means a rental car, scooter or Grab, since there is no practical bus, but duty-free petrol keeps it cheap. Food at night markets and local stalls is very inexpensive.
When it is cheaper
From May to October, the wet monsoon season, hotel rates are often roughly 20-40% lower than in the December-February peak. Malaysian school holidays, Hari Raya and Chinese New Year push prices up whatever the season.
How to spend less
- Eat at the rotating night markets, where satay, murtabak and grilled fish cost RM 3-15.
- Join a shared Kilim tour or island-hopping trip rather than hiring a private boat.
- Rent a car or scooter for a few days and use duty-free petrol; it is cheaper than Grab for full days.
- Buy drinks and snacks from duty-free shops rather than beach bars.
- Visit the SkyCab before 10:00 and check the website first, so you do not waste a trip when it closes for wind.
- Stay on Pantai Cenang or Pantai Tengah for walkable food and tour pick-ups.
