Where the money goes
A bed costs about RM 60 per person sharing in a centre hostel or simple hotel, RM 150 on the waterfront and RM 450 at a Tanjung Aru or Gaya Island resort, plus Malaysia's tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night for foreign guests and service tax. Food is cheap, about RM 50 a day in kopitiams, food courts and the night market, or RM 100 with sit-down meals. Sights and tours are the biggest variable: island boats and park fees, the Klias cruise, Mari Mari village and a Kinabalu Park day push the mid-range figure to about RM 180 a day. Grab keeps transport at about RM 15–40.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually softer in the wetter months, roughly November to February, outside Chinese New Year and the year-end school holidays. Weekends and Malaysian school holidays are busier and pricier on the islands and in Kundasang.
How to spend less
- Eat breakfast and lunch in kopitiams, where noodles cost about RM 8–18.
- Use Grab rather than street taxis: rides in town are about RM 8–20.
- Buy island boat tickets yourself at Jesselton Point instead of through a tour, and choose a two-island ticket.
- At seafood restaurants, ask the price per 100 g or per kilo, watch the weighing and agree the total before cooking.
- Rent a car for the Kinabalu Park, Kundasang and Poring day if there are two or more of you.
- Book the Mount Kinabalu climb well ahead and compare packages; last-minute places, if any, cost more.
