Is Kochi expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Kochi is inexpensive by international standards, though Fort Kochi's cafés and boutique hotels cost more than ordinary Kerala restaurants and lodges. Expect about ₹2,500 a day per person on a tight budget, about ₹6,300 mid-range and ₹17,000 or more for comfort. Rooms and a backwater trip take most of the money; local meals and ferries are very cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: Fort Kochi homestays cost about ₹1,500–3,000, boutique hotels in colonial buildings ₹4,000–8,000 and heritage hotels ₹10,000–25,000, with GST added to the room price. The backwaters are the other big item, from a shared day cruise at ₹1,500–3,000 per person to a private boat at ₹7,000–12,000. Food varies more than you might expect: a Kerala meal in a local restaurant is ₹200–400, while the same dish in a Fort Kochi café can cost three times as much. Ferries and the Water Metro cost very little.
When it is cheaper
The monsoon, roughly June to September, is the low season, and hotel rates are often noticeably lower. Christmas and New Year, when Fort Kochi is at its busiest, are the most expensive weeks; check whether quoted prices include GST.
How to spend less
- Use the government ferry or the Kochi Water Metro to cross to Ernakulam for very little instead of a taxi.
- Eat at 'meals' restaurants, where a full Kerala lunch on a banana leaf is cheap.
- Agree the per-kilo price and the cooking charge before buying fish at the Chinese fishing nets.
- Choose a shared backwater day cruise or a canoe trip rather than a private overnight houseboat.
- Use app-based autos and taxis, or agree fares in advance, and refuse shop stops.
- Buy whole spices such as pepper and cardamom, and compare prices in Ernakulam's markets.
