Is Knysna expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Knysna is good value for most foreign visitors, especially from Europe or North America: restaurant meals, wine and guesthouses cost much less than at home, though it is one of the pricier towns on the Garden Route. Expect about R1,200 a day per person on a tight budget, about R2,550 mid-range and R5,200 or more for comfort. Accommodation and the rental car take the largest share.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: backpackers and guesthouses in central Knysna are about R700–1,200 a night, mid-range rooms on Thesen Island or Leisure Isle R1,500–3,000, and lagoon-view lodges R3,500–8,000. A rental car is essential on the Garden Route, so fuel and hire come next. Activities such as the Featherbed tour or a lagoon cruise cost R300–900, and national park sections charge daily conservation fees, which are higher for foreign visitors. Food and drink are fair value: a main course is about R180–300 and a pint R50–70.
When it is cheaper
May to September, the cooler months, are usually the cheapest and quietest. Prices and crowds peak in the South African school holidays in December and January, and rise again around Easter.
How to spend less
- Avoid mid-December to mid-January, when South African holidaymakers fill the town and rates peak.
- Share a rental car; public transport on the Garden Route is limited and taxis add up.
- Order oysters by the piece at the waterfront as a starter rather than a full seafood platter.
- Choose free beaches such as Brenton-on-Sea and Buffalo Bay and the free viewpoints on the Eastern Head.
- If you visit several national park sections, check whether a Wild Card pass is cheaper than daily conservation fees.
- Stay in central Knysna, near shops and bus stops, for cheaper rooms.
