Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, from business hotels near the station to machiya townhouses and ryokan. Food can be cheap or expensive: market bowls and curry are good value, while seasonal crab in winter and kaiseki are luxuries. Sights are inexpensive, and buses are cheap. The Shinkansen from Tokyo (around ¥14,000–15,000 one way) is a large separate cost. Kanazawa charges an accommodation tax of about ¥200–500 per person per night.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are often cheaper in January and February (apart from holidays) and in early summer, while cherry-blossom season in early April, Golden Week and autumn colours in November are the most expensive.
How to spend less
