Is Kalamata expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Kalamata is good value: a budget day is about €75 per person and a mid-range day about €140, including a share of a rental car. As a working city with a long free beach and year-round life, it costs less than the islands; only luxury resorts such as Costa Navarino push prices high.

Where the money goes
Rooms are moderate: about €45–80 a double in the city centre, €80–150 on the Navarinou seafront and much more at resorts around Pylos and Kardamyli. Food is good value in ouzeris and tavernas, and the market sells olives, oil and cheese cheaply. Sights cost a few euros to about €12. The main extra is the car for Ancient Messene, Pylos and the Mani, plus motorway tolls if you drive from Athens.
When it is cheaper
October to April is usually cheaper than July–August, often by roughly 20–30% for rooms and cars. The city stays open all year, so winter is a real low-cost option for walking and sightseeing.
How to spend less
- Swim at the free city beach along Navarinou instead of paying for sunbeds.
- Buy olives, oil, honey and cheese at the Wednesday and Saturday open-air market.
- Stay in the centre near Aristomenous Street for the lowest room rates.
- Share a rental car and group the day trips by direction: Messene and Pylos one day, the Mani another.
- Eat at ouzeris for shared meze rather than ordering full mains.
- Take the KTEL bus from Athens Kifisos instead of driving to save on tolls and fuel.
