Is Johannesburg expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Johannesburg is good value for visitors from Europe or North America: restaurants, wine and guesthouses cost noticeably less than in most Western cities. A budget traveller needs about R1,100 a day, mid-range about R2,650 and comfort about R6,000 per person. Because you need ride-hailing or guided tours to get around, transport and tours take a bigger share than in walkable cities.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, from Melville guesthouses at R700–1,300 a double to Rosebank and Sandton hotels at R1,500–3,200. Guided tours, which are the main way to see Soweto and the Cradle of Humankind, add a lot to the sights budget, along with the Apartheid Museum and Mandela House (about R200 each). Ride-hailing is cheap per trip but you will take several a day. Restaurants are good value; add a 10–15% tip.
When it is cheaper
Rates in business hotels in Sandton and Rosebank often drop over the December–January holidays, when business travel stops. Otherwise seasonal price differences are modest; big conferences and events push prices up.
How to spend less
- Use the Gautrain from the airport to Sandton or Rosebank instead of a taxi.
- Book a combined Soweto and Apartheid Museum tour instead of separate trips.
- Eat at Sunday markets such as the Neighbourgoods or Rosebank rooftop market for cheap, varied food.
- Stay in Melville or Braamfontein guesthouses rather than Sandton hotels.
- Order local wines and beers, much cheaper than imported drinks.
- Pay by card and use ATMs inside shopping centres; carry little cash.
