Is Hiroshima expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Hiroshima is moderately priced for Japan: cheaper than Tokyo or Kyoto for hotels, with many of its most important sights free or very cheap. A budget day is about 6,500 yen per person, mid-range about 17,000 yen and comfort about 46,000 yen; accommodation and transport (especially the Shinkansen) are where the money goes.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest daily cost, and the Shinkansen to and from Osaka or Kyoto is the biggest single expense if you are not using a JR Pass. Sights are cheap: the Peace Park is free and the museum costs about 200 yen. Food is good value at okonomiyaki counters and noodle shops, while Miyajima ryokan with dinner and kaiseki meals are expensive. Miyajima also charges a small visitor tax on arrival.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually lower in January, February and the rainy June, and rise around cherry-blossom season in early April, Golden Week in early May and the 6 August ceremony.
How to spend less
- Visit the free Peace Memorial Park and pay only the small museum fee.
- Eat okonomiyaki at Okonomimura or station counters for a filling meal under ¥1,600.
- Use the trams (Hiroden) rather than taxis; they reach Miyajimaguchi too.
- Check whether a JR Pass is still worth it after recent price rises; single tickets are often cheaper for short trips.
- Hike up Mount Misen instead of taking the ropeway.
- Use convenience stores for breakfast and snacks.
