Where the money goes
Rooms take the biggest share: the station and Bergheim area has hotels and hostels from about €80–130 a night for a double, the old town is about €130–220, and historic hotels with castle or river views €220–400. Prices jump on the three castle illumination nights and during trade fairs in Frankfurt and Mannheim. Food is reasonable for Germany, with tavern mains at €14–24. Sights are cheap: the castle ticket including the funicular is about €9–11, and walks such as the Philosophers' Walk are free.
When it is cheaper
Winter outside the Christmas market weeks (January–March) and November are usually the cheapest months for hotels. Avoid trade-fair dates and illumination Saturdays if you want lower rates.
How to spend less
- Walk up to the castle by the stepped lanes and take the funicular only one way; the ticket for the courtyard is still needed.
- Stay near the main station or in Bergheim and walk or tram into the old town.
- Check the Frankfurt and Mannheim trade-fair calendars before booking; rates can double.
- Have lunch rather than dinner at the taverns; many offer cheaper lunch dishes.
- Buy pretzels and sandwiches at bakeries for picnics on the Neckar meadows.
- Use a day ticket if you plan several tram or bus rides.
