Is Grand Canyon expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
The Grand Canyon itself is good value: the park fee is US$35 per vehicle for seven days and the shuttle buses and rim trails are free. The cost is in getting there and sleeping nearby, as rim lodges sell out and a car is essential. A budget traveller needs about US$140 a day, mid-range about US$285 and comfort about US$550 per person, with car hire split between two.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: motels in Williams or Flagstaff run US$90–160, Tusayan chain hotels US$180–320 and the rim lodges US$200–350, booked up to 13 months ahead. A rental car and fuel are needed for the long drives from Phoenix or Las Vegas. Food inside the park is pricier than in nearby towns. Optional extras such as helicopter flights, mule rides and Antelope Canyon tours raise the total quickly. Arizona taxes of about 10–13% are added to most bills.
When it is cheaper
From November to February (except the holidays), rooms in Tusayan and the gateway towns are often noticeably cheaper and easier to book; the peak is March to October, especially summer.
How to spend less
- Stay in Williams or Flagstaff and drive in early, saving on rim lodge prices.
- Buy the America the Beautiful pass if you will visit three or more national parks; check the 2026 rules for non-US residents.
- Use the free shuttle buses inside the park instead of driving between viewpoints.
- Bring picnic food and water from a supermarket in Flagstaff; the Market Plaza general store is cheaper than restaurants.
- See sunrise and sunset from free viewpoints such as Mather Point and Hopi Point instead of paid tours.
- Book Antelope Canyon tours directly with licensed Navajo operators and compare upper and lower canyon prices.
