Where the money goes

Accommodation is the largest cost: even older apartments and hostels in Surfers Paradise cost A$120-180 for a double, and Broadbeach and Burleigh run A$200-350. Theme parks are the next big item, and most visitors do at least one. Restaurant mains in Broadbeach cost about A$30-45, and a hire car for the hinterland adds A$60-90 a day. Beaches and national-park walks are free.

When it is cheaper

Outside the Queensland and interstate school holidays and the December-January peak, rates are often noticeably lower, especially from late April to June and in late October and early November (before Schoolies).
