Is Galle expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Galle is cheap by Western standards, but inside the Fort it is one of the dearer places in Sri Lanka, with boutique hotels and café prices aimed at visitors. Expect about Rs 12,000 a day per person on a budget, about Rs 31,000 mid-range and about Rs 83,000 for comfort. Rooms in the Fort, restaurant dinners and tours such as whale watching take most of the money; local food and transport are cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: family guesthouses outside the Fort or in Unawatuna start around Rs 8,000–15,000, boutique rooms inside the Fort cost Rs 18,000–35,000, and colonial hotels and villas Rs 50,000–120,000. Eating in the Fort costs several times more than local cafés, where rice and curry is Rs 1,000–2,000. Tours and transport come next: tuk-tuks for the coast, a driver for the day at about Rs 15,000–25,000, and whale watching at roughly US$40–60. Walking the Fort and its ramparts is free.
When it is cheaper
May to September, during the south-west monsoon, is low season on this coast, and many hotels offer noticeably lower rates. Christmas to New Year is the busiest and most expensive period.
How to spend less
- Stay outside the Fort or in Unawatuna and walk into the Fort for sunrise and sunset.
- Eat rice and curry at local cafés outside the Fort for lunch.
- Use the PickMe or Uber apps for tuk-tuks, or agree the fare before getting in.
- Take the coastal train from Colombo instead of a private car.
- Share a driver for the day with other travellers for Koggala, Mirissa and the tea estate.
- Visit in shoulder months such as April or November for lower prices and decent weather.
