Is Fez expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Fez is moderately priced: cheaper than Marrakech for rooms and food, but more than Chefchaouen or rural Morocco. A realistic budget day is about 390 MAD per person (roughly €35), mid-range about 1,050 MAD, and the money goes mostly on riads, guides and day trips with a driver.

Where the money goes
Your riad is the biggest cost: hostels and simple riads near Bab Bou Jeloud run about 250–500 MAD a night, courtyard riads in Fes el-Bali about 600–1,200 MAD, and palace riads 1,800–4,500 MAD. Next come guides and drivers: an official guide for a half day costs roughly 300–500 MAD and a car with driver to Volubilis and Meknes roughly 700–1,000 MAD. Tickets for madrasas and museums are cheap (about 20–30 MAD each), and street food is very cheap, while a full riad dinner costs 200–350 MAD per person. A tourist tax of roughly 15–40 MAD per person per night is added to hotel bills.
When it is cheaper
Rooms tend to be cheaper in the heat of July and August and in the cool, wet winter months; spring and autumn, the most pleasant seasons, are also the busiest and most expensive.
How to spend less
- Hire an official guide only for the first morning, then repeat the routes alone with an offline map.
- Eat street food near Bab Bou Jeloud: harira, bissara and skewers cost a fraction of riad dinners.
- Take the train to Meknes and a grand taxi to Volubilis instead of hiring a driver for the day.
- Use metered red petit taxis rather than agreeing fixed prices with drivers who approach you.
- Choose a riad with breakfast included and ask it to arrange a porter at the gate at the standard rate.
- Look but do not feel obliged to buy at the tannery shops; a 10–20 MAD tip for the terrace is enough.
