Is Dresden expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Dresden is reasonably priced for Germany: cheaper than Munich, Hamburg or Frankfurt for hotels and eating out, and similar to Leipzig. Expect about €85 a day per person on a tight budget, about €165 mid-range and €315 or more for comfort. Hotels in the Altstadt and the big museum tickets take most of the money; transport is cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: hostels and simple hotels in the Äussere Neustadt are about €70–110 for a double, hotels near the Hauptbahnhof €100–160, and Altstadt hotels around Neumarkt €120–190, rising to €200–400 for historic palace hotels. Sights come second, because Dresden's best collections — the Historic Green Vault, the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the porcelain collection — are separate tickets of roughly €15–25 each. Food is good value, especially in the Neustadt, and the tram network is cheap. Dresden also adds an accommodation tax of about 6% of the room price.
When it is cheaper
January to March and November (before the Christmas market) are usually the cheapest months for hotels. Prices rise in summer and especially on weekends during the Striezelmarkt from late November to Christmas.
How to spend less
- Stay in the Äussere Neustadt, 15–20 minutes' walk from the old town, where rooms, food and drinks are cheaper.
- Buy a city day ticket (about €8–9) on days when you take several trams.
- Pick two or three Dresden State Art Collections museums rather than all of them, and check closing days first.
- Visit the Frauenkirche for free outside services, and pay only for the dome climb if you want the view.
- Use a VVO day ticket for Saxon Switzerland; it covers the S-Bahn and the Rathen ferry.
- Look for last-minute standing or restricted-view Semperoper seats, sometimes about €10–20, instead of a tour.
