Is Croatia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Croatia is no longer a cheap destination: on the coast in summer, prices are close to Italy or Spain, while inland and out of season it is better value. A budget day is about €90 per person, mid-range about €190, and the money goes mainly on coastal accommodation, national park tickets and ferries.

Where the money goes
Accommodation on the Dalmatian coast is the largest cost in July and August, especially in Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split. National park tickets for Plitvice and Krka are high in summer, and Dubrovnik's walls are among the most expensive sights in Europe. Ferries and catamarans add up if you hop between islands, and restaurant prices on the seafront are high. Inland, Zagreb and Slavonia are noticeably cheaper, and buses are reasonable everywhere.
When it is cheaper
May, June, September and October are cheaper than July–August, and park tickets drop out of season; from November to March prices are lowest but many island services stop.
How to spend less
- Rent private rooms or apartments (sobe) instead of hotels.
- Visit Plitvice and Krka outside July–August for lower ticket prices.
- Use buses between cities; they are frequent and cheaper than renting a car for the whole trip.
- Take slow Jadrolinija car ferries rather than catamarans when time allows.
- Buy picnic supplies at markets and Konzum or Tommy supermarkets.
- Stay in Zadar or Šibenik rather than Dubrovnik for cheaper coastal bases.
