Short answer
Český Krumlov is moderately priced by Western European standards but expensive for the Czech Republic outside Prague, because so many visitors come for the day. Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest cost, particularly inside the river bend. Food is reasonable, but restaurants right beside the castle charge more than those across the river. Sights are moderately priced, and several castle tours in one day add up. Transport is cheap: buses from Prague and trains to České Budějovice are inexpensive, and the town is walkable. The town charges a small local accommodation fee per person per night.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are cheapest from November to March, apart from Christmas, and noticeably more expensive in July, August and on the Five-Petalled Rose festival weekend.
How to spend less
- Stay in Latrán or near the bus station rather than on the main square.
- Eat across the river from the castle, where prices are lower.
- Choose one castle interior tour and enjoy the free courtyards and gardens.
- Book the Prague bus early for the cheapest fares.
- Drink local Eggenberg beer rather than imported brands.
- Do the shorter Vltava paddle that ends under the castle.
