Is Cebu expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Cebu is cheap by Western standards, and local food and buses cost very little, but beach resorts on Mactan and private transport can be expensive. Expect about ₱2,200 a day per person on a budget, about ₱5,700 mid-range and ₱16,000 or more for comfort. The money goes on beds, boat and canyoneering trips, and drivers for the long distances.

Where the money goes
Accommodation varies most: dive-shop hostels and guesthouses in Moalboal cost about ₱900–2,000 a night, mid-range city hotels ₱2,500–5,000, and Mactan beach resorts ₱8,000–25,000. Activities are the next big cost — island hopping, canyoneering and boat trips to Pescador Island each run into the thousands of pesos, plus small entrance and environmental fees at beaches, falls and sanctuaries. Getting around also adds up: buses are cheap, but a car with driver for a day costs about ₱3,500–6,000. Local food stays cheap, at ₱150–300 for an eatery meal and ₱400–900 in a restaurant.
When it is cheaper
Outside the January–May dry season, and away from the Sinulog festival weekend in January, hotel rates are often lower and resorts run promotions. The trade-off is more rain and the risk of typhoons, especially from about August to November, when boat trips can be cancelled.
How to spend less
- Take Ceres buses from the South Bus Terminal to Moalboal and Oslob instead of a private car.
- Snorkel the sardine run straight off Panagsama Beach with rented gear (about ₱150–300) rather than paying for a boat.
- Ask whether island-hopping prices include the per-person sanctuary and island entrance fees.
- Eat in carinderias and at barbecue stalls; resort restaurants on Mactan charge several times more.
- Use Grab or insist on the taxi meter in Cebu City.
- Buy dried mangoes, danggit and chicharon in supermarkets or at Taboan Market, not at the airport.
