Is Cairns expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Cairns itself is one of the more affordable places in Australia to sleep and eat, but the reason you come, the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest tours, is expensive. A mid-range day is about A$415 per person, and almost half of that goes on tours and tickets. Compared with Sydney, rooms are cheaper; compared with Southeast Asian dive destinations, the reef is several times the price.

Where the money goes
Tours are the big cost: an outer reef day is A$250-350, the Kuranda combo A$130-150, and a Daintree trip or crocodile cruise adds more. Accommodation is reasonable by Australian standards, with hostels at A$80-150 for a double and Esplanade hotels at A$180-300. Eating out costs like the rest of Australia, while a rental car is almost essential for the Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands. Reef tours include the Environmental Management Charge; check it is in the quoted price.
When it is cheaper
The wet season (roughly November to May) brings lower room rates and tour discounts, often 15-30% (check current deals). The trade-off is heavy rain, rougher seas, stinger season and cyclone risk.
How to spend less
- Choose one excellent outer-reef day rather than several cheaper inner-reef trips.
- Book reef and Kuranda tours direct or through your hostel, which often has discounted rates.
- Ride the Skyrail one way and the Scenic Railway the other with a combo ticket rather than two returns.
- Swim at the free Esplanade Lagoon instead of paying for a resort pool day.
- Share a rental car for the Daintree and Tablelands rather than booking separate guided tours.
- Eat at the Cairns Night Markets or cook in hostel kitchens on non-tour days.
