Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest cost, and those inside the walls of the Città Alta cost more than hotels near the station. Food is fair for Lombardy, with lower prices in the Città Bassa. Sights are inexpensive: the Cappella Colleoni is free and most tickets are €5–15. Transport is cheap thanks to the short airport bus and the funicular. Bergamo adds a tourist tax of roughly €1.50–5 per person per night.
When it is cheaper
Winter, apart from the Christmas period, is the cheapest time, and rooms are often lower in July and August than in spring; trade fairs in Milan can push prices up on some dates.
How to spend less
- Stay in the lower town near the station and ride the funicular up.
- Eat dinner in the Città Bassa, where trattoria mains cost €12–18.
- Buy a city transport day pass if you will ride the funiculars and buses several times.
- Use Bergamo as a cheaper base for Milan, 50 minutes by train.
- Walk the Venetian walls and see the Cappella Colleoni for free.
- Visit Lake Iseo by train and ferry rather than on a tour.
