Is Auckland expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Short answer

Auckland is expensive by world standards and one of the pricier cities in the Southern Hemisphere, roughly on a par with Sydney and above most of Western Europe for eating out. A careful budget traveller needs about NZ$145 a day, a mid-range visitor about NZ$315 and a comfortable trip about NZ$660 per person. Most of the money goes on beds, restaurant meals and the island ferries and tours.

Where the money goes

Accommodation is the biggest single cost: even a basic double near the centre or K Road runs about NZ$110–170, and waterfront hotels at the Viaduct are NZ$220–350. Eating out is the second: a café breakfast and a sit-down dinner easily reach NZ$90 a day, and wine on Waiheke adds tastings of NZ$20–40. Paid sights are moderate (the museum, the Sky Tower, the Maritime Museum at about NZ$20–25), but the ferries and guided west-coast tours (about NZ$150–200) add up quickly. Prices include 15% GST, and tipping is not expected.

When it is cheaper

Accommodation is usually cheapest from June to August, when the weather is cooler and wetter, and rates can be noticeably lower (often by a quarter or so) than in the January peak. The shoulder months of April–May and October–November are a good compromise.
