Tromso on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Tromsø is hard on a budget, but possible if you limit paid excursions. Plan on about NOK 1,460 per person per day (bed NOK 550, food NOK 450, sights NOK 400, transport NOK 60), staying in a hostel or guesthouse and cooking or eating supermarket food.

Free things to do
- Walk Storgata past the wooden 19th-century houses and Tromsø Cathedral
- Walk across the Tromsø Bridge for the view of the Arctic Cathedral and the mountains
- Watch the aurora on strong nights from Telegrafbukta beach or Prestvannet lake
- Climb the Sherpa stairs to Storsteinen in summer (about an hour)
- Walk the harbour front and Stortorget square
- Enjoy the blue midday twilight of the polar night on a walk along the shore
Cheap eats
- Hot dog in a bun or lompe from a kiosk: cheap by Norwegian standards
- Waffle with brown cheese and coffee: about NOK 40–70 for the waffle
- Fish soup lunch: about NOK 200–300
- Bacalao at lunch: about NOK 250–380
- Supermarket smoked salmon, fish cakes and flatbread for a picnic: a fraction of restaurant prices
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels and guesthouses at the edge of the centre, at about NOK 900–1,500 a night for a room or less for a dorm bed; a kitchen saves a lot on food. Tromsdalen, across the bridge, is slightly cheaper than the centre. Book early for the aurora season and Christmas.
Getting around cheaply
The centre is walkable. Svipper buses cost about NOK 40–50 a ride in the app (check current fares). The airport bus takes about 15 minutes from the airport, about 5 km from the centre. Renting a car is only worth it in a group and if you can drive on ice; otherwise, tours include transport to dark sites.
A sample budget day
- Morning: walk Storgata and the harbour, then the Polar Museum (about NOK 100–150)
- Lunch: fish soup in the centre (about NOK 250)
- Afternoon: walk across the bridge to the Arctic Cathedral (about NOK 100)
- Evening: supermarket dinner, then aurora watching at Telegrafbukta on a clear night (free)
- Total: about NOK 600–700 plus your bed (NOK 550), so roughly NOK 1,200–1,450 without a paid tour
More ways to save
- Visit in late September or October, or in summer, for lower prices.
- Book aurora tours for your first night, not your last.
- Check cloud cover on yr.no before paying for a chase; clear sky matters more than the Kp index.
- Bring your own wool layers rather than paying for extra clothing hire.
- Buy wine and spirits at Vinmonopolet if needed; bars are very expensive.
- Fill a flask with hot drinks before evening trips.
