Sintra on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Sintra works on a budget if you limit the palaces: a careful day costs about €96 per person (bed €40, food €25, sights €25, transport €6). Many of its best views and gardens are outside the ticketed sites.

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay near Sintra station and in Estefânia, at about €60–110 a double (roughly €30–55 each when sharing). Staying in Lisbon and coming by train is another option.
Getting around cheaply
The train from Lisbon Rossio takes about 40 minutes for about €2–3. Bus 434 links the station, the old town, the Moorish Castle and Pena; bus 403 runs to Cabo da Roca and Cascais. Walking is free and often faster at busy times.

More ways to save
- Visit in spring or autumn for fewer queues and moderate room prices.
- Buy palace tickets online for a fixed time to avoid wasted trips.
- Arrive on the first trains from Lisbon to beat the crowds.
- Carry snacks and water up the hill, where cafés charge more.
- Use the 403 bus for Cabo da Roca and continue to Cascais for the train back.
- Bring a light jacket instead of buying one when the mist rolls in.
