Free things to do
- Cross the Stari Most early in the morning before the crowds
- Walk the cobbled lanes of Kujundžiluk, the old bazaar street
- See the small Kriva Ćuprija (Crooked Bridge) upstream
- Watch the bridge divers from the river terraces (tip if you watch)
- Walk the west bank to Spanish Square and the restored Mostar Gymnasium
- Walk up to the Partisan Memorial Cemetery
Cheap eats
- Burek, sirnica or zeljanica with yoghurt: about KM 4–8
- Ćevapi in somun with onion: about KM 8–14
- Tufahija or hurmašice: about KM 3–6
- Bosnian coffee away from the bridge: about KM 2–3
- Stuffed peppers or dolma in a home-cooking restaurant: about KM 12–20
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in guesthouses and small hostels on the edge of the old town, where rooms cost about KM 60–100 a night; dorm beds are cheaper. Staying within walking distance of the bridge lets you see it early and late. Book ahead for July and August.
Getting around cheaply
The old town is walkable, and the bus and train station is about 15 minutes' walk north. Taxis cost a few marks within town. The train to Sarajevo (about 2 hours) is cheap and scenic; buses go to Dubrovnik (about 3 hours) and Split (about 4 hours). For Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravica, sharing a car or taxi is cheaper than individual tours.

More ways to save
- Visit in May, June, September or October for lower prices and pleasant temperatures.
- Have your coffee with a bridge view but eat elsewhere.
- Take the train to Sarajevo instead of a tour or private transfer.
- Arrive at Kravica by 10:00 in summer to beat the crowds.
- Withdraw marks from an ATM rather than paying in euros at rounded rates.
- Ask for 'domaća kuhinja' (home cooking) restaurants for cheap, filling plates.
