Istanbul on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, if you plan around ticket prices: food, transport and mosques are cheap or free, while the big monuments are not. A realistic minimum is about €80 a day per person (bed €35, food €15, sights €25, transport €3), and less on days when you visit only free places.

Free things to do
- The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque), free outside prayer times, with modest dress
- Süleymaniye Mosque and its terrace view over the Golden Horn
- Wandering the Grand Bazaar (closed Sundays) and the Spice Bazaar
- Gülhane Park, especially in April during the tulip season
- The colourful streets of Balat and Fener on the Golden Horn
- Istiklal Avenue and the walk down through Galata to Karaköy
Cheap eats
- Simit (sesame bread ring) for breakfast: roughly 20–35 TL (≈€0.40–0.70)
- Balık ekmek (fish sandwich) at Eminönü: roughly 200–350 TL (≈€4–7)
- Midye dolma (stuffed mussels): roughly 15–30 TL (≈€0.30–0.60) each
- Lahmacun (flatbread with minced meat): roughly 120–250 TL (≈€2.50–5)
- A lokanta lunch of home-style stews: roughly 150–350 TL (≈€3–7) a dish
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in Sultanahmet for the sights, or in Karaköy, Beyoğlu (around Galata and Cihangir) and Kadıköy on the Asian side for better-value rooms and food. Hostel dorm beds typically cost roughly €12–30 a night, more in summer; check that the area is near the T1 tram or a metro stop.
Getting around cheaply
Buy an Istanbulkart at a station machine and use the T1 tram, metro, funiculars, buses and ferries; each ride costs well under €1. From Istanbul Airport (IST), the M11 metro to Gayrettepe connecting to the M2 into the centre takes about an hour and is the cheapest option; Havaist buses go to Sultanahmet and Taksim. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), use the M4 metro to Kadıköy or a Havabus.
A sample budget day
- Morning: simit and tea (about €1), the Blue Mosque (free) and the Hippodrome
- Lunch: lokanta stews near the Grand Bazaar (about €5–7)
- Afternoon: the Grand Bazaar and Süleymaniye Mosque (free), then a ferry to Kadıköy (under €1)
- Evening: street food and tea in Kadıköy (about €6–8); dorm bed about €20
- Total: about €35 on a free-sights day with a dorm; about €80 sharing a budget double and paying for one major monument
More ways to save
- Group the paid sights on one or two days and fill the rest with mosques, bazaars and neighbourhoods, which are free.
- Withdraw lira from bank ATMs (not standalone 'Euronet'-style machines) and decline the machine's own conversion.
- Drink tea, ayran or fresh juice rather than beer: alcohol is heavily taxed.
- Stay on the Asian side in Kadıköy for cheaper rooms and some of the city's best-value food, a 20-minute ferry from Eminönü.
- Look at the price board before you eat; lokantas and kebab shops usually display prices, terrace restaurants in Sultanahmet often do not.
- Visit from November to March for the lowest room prices; the monuments are quieter too.

Common questions
Is Istanbul cheap to visit?
Food and transport are cheap, but hotels in Sultanahmet and the major monuments are priced close to European levels. Free mosques, bazaars and ferries keep a budget trip affordable.
Is the Museum Pass Istanbul worth it?
Only if you plan Topkapı with the Harem plus at least one or two other covered museums. It does not include Hagia Sophia's upper gallery or the Basilica Cistern.
What is the cheapest way from Istanbul Airport to the city?
The M11 metro to Gayrettepe and then the M2, with an Istanbulkart, in about an hour. Havaist buses cost more but go direct to Sultanahmet and Taksim.
