Innsbruck on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, if you plan around one big mountain day: the Old Town, the riverbanks and many views are free, and local transport is cheap. A realistic minimum is about €110 a day per person sharing a room — around €50 for a bed, €35 for food, €20 for sights and €5 for transport.

Free things to do
- Maria-Theresien-Strasse and the Annasäule column, with the Nordkette at the end of the street
- The Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) seen from the street in the Altstadt
- The view of the painted houses from the Mariahilf bank of the Inn
- The Hofgarten park next to the Hofburg
- Walking the medieval centre of Hall in Tirol (only the short train ride to pay)
- Browsing the Christmas markets in the Old Town from mid-November
Cheap eats
- Tiroler Gröstl with a fried egg in a simple inn — about €14–16
- Kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings) in broth — about €14
- Speck and bread from a supermarket or market for a picnic — a few euros
- Apfelstrudel or Kaiserschmarrn with coffee — about €7–10
- Sausages and snacks from Christmas-market stalls in winter — a few euros
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels and simpler hotels in Wilten and around the main station, about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town, where doubles start at about €90–140. Book early for ski season, Christmas and the Four Hills week in January.
Getting around cheaply
Walk the compact centre — the main station to the Golden Roof is about 15 minutes. Use IVB trams and buses (about €3 a ride, or a 24-hour ticket about €6–8), and ask your hotel for a Welcome Card with free local buses. From the airport, bus F takes 15–20 minutes. Trains to Hall in Tirol take about 10 minutes.

More ways to save
- Plan the Nordkette, a museum and the Alpenzoo on the same Innsbruck Card day.
- Visit Hall in Tirol by train instead of a tour; its medieval centre is free to walk.
- Carry a refillable bottle; tap water and many public fountains are drinkable.
- Pick a hotel that gives the Welcome Card so you don't pay for buses.
- Travel in June or September for good hiking without peak ski-season prices.
- Look for lunch menus (Mittagsmenü) in inns, usually cheaper than dinner.
