Dubai on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes — Dubai on a budget is easier than its reputation suggests, thanks to the cheap Metro, free beaches and cheap cafeteria food. A realistic minimum is about AED 380 a day per person sharing a room: roughly AED 180 for a bed, AED 100 for food, AED 80 for sights and AED 20 for transport.

Free things to do
- The Dubai Fountain show, every 30 minutes from about 18:00 to 23:00
- Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (Al Bastakiya)
- The Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira
- JBR Beach and Kite Beach, with a view of the Burj Al Arab
- The Dubai Marina promenade
- Looking into the Dubai Aquarium tank from inside Dubai Mall
Cheap eats
- Shawarma wrap from a cafeteria — roughly AED 8–20
- Biryani or curry in Karama or Bur Dubai — roughly AED 15–35
- Karak chai and a paratha roll — about AED 5–10
- Iranian or Indian dinner in Al Rigga, Deira — about AED 40–60
- Luqaimat (sweet dumplings) — roughly AED 15–30 a portion
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in Deira, Bur Dubai and Al Barsha, which have the cheapest hotel rooms close to the Metro, typically AED 300–450 a double. Dubai has few hostels, so sharing a budget hotel room is often the best option.
Getting around cheaply
Buy a Nol card and use the Metro, trams and buses. The Red Line connects the airport's Terminals 1 and 3 to Downtown in about 30 minutes. Abras across the Creek cost AED 1. Use Careem or taxis only for short gaps the Metro does not cover.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Al Fahidi, then the AED 1 abra to the Deira souks
- Lunch: biryani in a Deira restaurant (about AED 25)
- Afternoon: Dubai Frame (about AED 50), Metro rides (about AED 20)
- Evening: Dubai Mall and the free fountain show, shawarma and karak chai dinner (about AED 30)
- Total: about AED 380 including a budget hotel room shared (about AED 180)
More ways to save
- Visit in the shoulder months (October, April) for lower hotel prices without the worst summer heat.
- Choose one paid highlight per day — Burj Khalifa, the Frame or a safari — and fill the rest with free sights.
- Drink water from supermarkets, not hotel minibars; heat means you will need a lot.
- Use ladies' nights and happy hours if you want a drink, as alcohol prices are high.
- Check if your hotel includes breakfast; it can save AED 40–90 a day.
- Shop in Carrefour or Lulu supermarkets for snacks and fruit.
