Free things to do
- Swim and walk on My Khe Beach, best at sunrise and in the late afternoon
- Watch the Dragon Bridge breathe fire and water over the Han River (Saturday and Sunday at 21:00)
- Visit the Linh Ung Pagoda on the Son Tra peninsula and its large Lady Buddha statue facing the sea
- Walk the Han River promenade and browse the riverside night market
- Look at the pink Da Nang Cathedral from outside and wander through Han Market
- Browse the stone-carving village at the foot of the Marble Mountains
Cheap eats
- Mì Quảng at a specialist shop: roughly 30,000–60,000 VND
- Bún chả cá (fish-cake noodle soup): roughly 30,000–50,000 VND
- Bún mắm nêm at Chợ Cồn: roughly 25,000–40,000 VND
- Bánh mì from a street cart: roughly 15,000–35,000 VND
- Bánh xèo and nem lụi: roughly 50,000–100,000 VND per person
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in An Thuong, the grid of streets just behind My Khe beach, where guesthouse rooms cost about 300,000–700,000 VND and there are hostels with dorm beds roughly in the low hundreds of thousands of dong. The city centre near the Han River is another good-value area.
Getting around cheaply
Grab motorbike taxis are the cheapest way around; Grab cars are still inexpensive. The airport is 10–15 minutes from the centre, so a Grab ride costs little. For Hue, the train (about 2.5 hours) or a bus through the tunnel (about 2 hours) is cheaper than a private car; shuttles run to Hoi An.
A sample budget day
- Morning: swim at My Khe and have bánh mì and iced coffee (about 50,000 VND)
- Lunch: mì Quảng or bún chả cá at a local shop (about 50,000 VND)
- Afternoon: Grab to the Marble Mountains and climb Thuy Son (entry and rides roughly 150,000 VND)
- Evening: market dinner and a beer, then the riverside night market (about 150,000 VND)
- Total: about 400,000 VND plus your bed (250,000 VND), so roughly 650,000–730,000 VND
More ways to save
- Eat where locals queue, at shops that cook one dish only.
- Visit Hoi An by shuttle or Grab rather than on an organised tour.
- Buy coffee and dried goods in supermarkets with printed prices if market quotes seem high.
- Choose a guesthouse with breakfast included.
- Travel February to May for good weather without the summer holiday crowds.
- Combine the Hai Van Pass and Hue with the scenic train to save on a private driver.
