Free things to do
- Walk the Old Town through Michael's Gate to Hlavné námestie and the Roland Fountain
- Hunt for the bronze statues, including Čumil peering out of a manhole
- Bratislava Castle grounds and terraces with views over the Danube
- The exterior of the Art Nouveau Blue Church
- Slavín war memorial and its night view over the city
- Walks in the Bratislava Forest Park around Kamzík and Železná studnička
Cheap eats
- Daily lunch menu (soup and main), about €7–10
- Bryndzové halušky, sheep's-cheese dumplings, about €9–13 in the Old Town and less outside it
- Lokše (potato pancakes) at markets and festivals, a few euros
- Kapustnica (sauerkraut soup), about €4–6
- Half-litre of Slovak beer in a local pub, about €2.50–4
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels and simple hotels around the main station and Nivy, 15–20 minutes' walk from the Old Town, at about €50–80 for a double; dorm beds are roughly €15–30. Remember the city accommodation tax of a few euros per person per night.
Getting around cheaply
Walk the centre; trams and buses cost roughly €1–2 for a 30–60-minute ticket (IDS BK app or machines). Bus 61 links the airport and the main station in about 25–30 minutes. From Vienna Airport, direct buses take about 1 hour and are often cheap if booked ahead.

- Take the regional train to the Little Carpathian wine towns rather than a tour.
- Carry a reusable bottle; tap water is good.
- Look for wineries' Open Cellar Days in November, when tastings are good value.
- Check the 'Bratislava CARD' against your plans; it is worth it only if you visit several paid museums.
