Free things to do
- Walk the lanes and walls of Icherisheher, the Old City (entering the Maiden Tower costs extra)
- Baku Boulevard, about 3 km along the bay
- Fountains Square and Nizami Street with their oil-boom architecture
- Highland Park and Martyrs' Lane, with the view over the bay and the Flame Towers
- The Flame Towers' light show after dark, seen from the Boulevard or Highland Park
- The outside of the Heydar Aliyev Center and its sloping lawns
Cheap eats
- Qutab with greens, meat or pumpkin, about 1.5–4 AZN each
- Dovga yoghurt and herb soup, about 4–8 AZN a bowl

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay around Sahil and Fountains Square or near 28 May station, close to the metro and the Old City. Rooms run about 40–80 AZN a double; hostels in the centre usually cost less per bed.
Getting around cheaply
Buy a BakiKART (2 AZN deposit) and ride the metro and buses for about 0.60 AZN. From the airport, the H1 Aero Express bus to 28 May station costs about 1.30 AZN; Bolt is about 20–30 AZN.

- Visit Taza Bazaar in the morning for cheap fruit, nuts, cheese and bread for picnics.
- Combine the outskirts sights (Gobustan, mud volcanoes, Ateshgah, Yanar Dag) into one shared tour.
