Istanbul Airport (IST) to Istanbul
The M11 metro from the airport to Gayrettepe, then the M2 to Taksim, is the cheapest reliable route and avoids motorway traffic. Havaist airport buses go direct to Taksim, Sultanahmet and other districts, and taxis are quickest door to door outside rush hour.
Best for most people: Havaist bus. It goes straight from the arrivals level to the main districts with room for luggage and no changes.

Other airports
- Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side, about 45–50 km from Taksim, used mainly by Pegasus and other low-cost airlines
Tips
- Get an Istanbulkart at the airport: it works on the metro, buses, trams and ferries and can be shared by more than one person.
- Weekday rush hours on the motorway (roughly 07:30–10:00 and 17:00–20:00) can double journey times by road; the metro is not affected.
- For Sultanahmet with heavy luggage, the Havaist bus avoids several metro changes.
- Turkish lira prices change often; check the current fare on the machine or at the ticket desk rather than relying on old figures.
- If you fly into Sabiha Gökçen instead, there are separate Havabus buses and a metro line on the Asian side.
Common questions
How much is a taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
It is metered, and fares in lira rise often. As a rough guide, expect something like 1,000–1,700 TRY to Taksim or Sultanahmet, plus any bridge or road tolls. Use the official rank outside Arrivals, check the meter is on, and keep small notes handy. An Uber taxi or a pre-booked transfer gives you a price or route you can check in advance.
Does the metro run to Istanbul Airport at night?
The M11 metro does not run all night. It usually starts around 06:00 and stops around midnight, but check last departures on arrival. After that, the main Havaist airport bus routes keep running through the night, less often, and taxis are always available at the official rank.
How long does it take to get from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet?
Allow about 60–90 minutes. By metro you need to change at least twice, which adds walking time with luggage. The Havaist bus to Sultanahmet takes about an hour outside rush hour. A taxi can be faster late at night but slower in weekday traffic.
Can I pay by card at Istanbul Airport?
Yes. Istanbulkart machines take cash and usually cards, Havaist buses accept Istanbulkart and often contactless bank cards, and most taxis now accept cards, though not all. Carry some lira in cash for taxis and small purchases just in case. Contactless works at most metro gates too.
