Best time to visit Romania: month by month
Short answer
May to June and September to October are the best times: in Bucharest, highs of about 19–26°C and around 4–12 rainy days a month, with green or autumn-coloured Carpathians. July and August are hot in Bucharest (highs about 31°C) but best for the Transfăgărășan and mountain hiking, while winter is cold (highs around 7–9°C, lows near or below 0°C) with skiing near Brașov and Christmas markets.

Spring (Mar–May)
March is still chilly (highs about 11°C); April warms to around 16°C, and May reaches about 22°C with blossoming countryside.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Warm to hot, with highs of 26–31°C in Bucharest and 6–12 rainy days a month; cooler in the mountains, and the Transfăgărășan is usually open from about July.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
September (about 25°C, only 4 rainy days) and October (about 19°C) are excellent, with autumn colours; November turns grey and cool (about 13°C).
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cold, with highs of 7–9°C and lows around 0 to −1°C in Bucharest, colder in Transylvania; ski season near Brașov and Christmas markets in Sibiu and other cities.

When to avoid
Avoid peak summer weekends at Bran and Peleș if you dislike queues, and the hottest weeks of July and August in Bucharest. In winter, the Transfăgărășan is closed and some mountain roads are difficult.
