Start in Nafplio, driving or taking the bus from Athens, then return to Athens and fly to Rhodes for the beach part. Rhodes airport has many international flights in summer, so you can fly home from there.
Getting between them: There is no direct link. Nafplio to Athens is about 2 h by car or bus; Athens to Rhodes is a flight of about 1 h, plus airport time. Is Nafplio or Rhodes cheaper?
Nafplio, by our mid-range estimate: about €155 per person per day against €170 on Rhodes. Nafplio's small hotels and tavernas are reasonably priced outside holiday weekends, when Athenians fill the town. Rhodes has a wide range, from package resorts to Old Town boutique hotels; prices peak in July and August. A car on Rhodes adds to the cost.
How do I get from Nafplio to Rhodes?
There is no direct connection. Go back to Athens, about 2 hours by car or KTEL bus, then fly to Rhodes, about 1 hour. Alternatively, ferries from Piraeus to Rhodes take roughly 13 to 17 hours, often overnight with cabins. Most people combine a few days in Nafplio with a flight to Rhodes for the island part.
What day trips can I do from Nafplio?
Mycenae is about 30 minutes by car, and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus about 40 minutes; both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Tiryns is just outside town. You can also visit wineries around Nemea, or the beaches of Tolo and Karathona. Public buses exist, but a rental car makes day trips much easier.
When is the best time to visit?
Our data favours April–May and September–November for both. Summer is hot: July highs average around 36°C in Nafplio and 37°C on Rhodes, which makes sightseeing tiring. Spring is ideal for walking and ancient sites, while September and October are best for swimming, with the sea still warm and fewer crowds.
