Crete or Nafplio? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Crete for a full beach-and-mountain holiday of a week or more: gorges, long coastlines and the best regional food in Greece. Pick Nafplio for a short, walkable break of two to four days, ideally in spring or autumn, with Mycenae and Epidaurus a short drive away. Nafplio is also slightly cheaper on our mid-range numbers.
Crete: suits families, couples and first-timers who want beaches, hiking and food on one large island and have at least a week and a rental car.
Nafplio: suits couples and friends who want an elegant, compact old town, castle views and ancient sites within an hour, without needing a ferry or flight from Athens.

Common questions
Is Crete or Nafplio cheaper?
On our mid-range figures Nafplio is a little cheaper, at about €155 per person per day against about €165 for Crete. The gap widens in July and August, when Crete's beach hotels and car hire peak, and narrows on Nafplio weekends, when Athenians book the old town guesthouses. Crete also usually adds a ferry or flight and a rental car to your total.
Can I visit Nafplio and Crete in one trip?
Yes, with Athens as the hinge. Spend three days in Nafplio, return towards Athens by road in about two hours, then take the overnight ferry from Piraeus or a short flight of around 50 minutes to Heraklion or Chania. Ten days is a comfortable minimum; with less time, choose one place rather than spending a day in transit.
When is the best time to visit each?
Crete is at its best for swimming from June to September, though the main beaches and Knossos are crowded in July and August; late May and late September are a good compromise. Nafplio is best in April, May, September, October and even November, when walking up to Palamidi is comfortable and the town feels local rather than packed.
Do I need a car in Crete or Nafplio?
In Crete, practically yes: the island is about 260 km long and the best beaches, gorges and villages are poorly served by public buses. In Nafplio you can manage without one for the old town and Arvanitia, and buses reach Tolo and Mycenae, but a car makes a day covering Mycenae and Epidaurus much easier.
