Common questions
Is Athens or Nafplio cheaper?
Nafplio is a little cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €155 per person per day against €168 in Athens. Meals in both are good value, but Athens central hotels cost more. Nafplio rooms jump on weekends and Greek holidays, when Athenians drive down, so a midweek stay gives the best prices.
Can I visit Nafplio as a day trip from Athens?
Yes, it's about two hours each way by car or bus, so a long day trip is possible. You'll rush, though: Palamidi, the old town and a swim take most of a day, and Mycenae or Epidaurus need extra time. Staying at least one or two nights makes the drive worthwhile.
How do I get from Athens to Nafplio without a car?
Take the KTEL Argolida intercity bus from the Kifissos bus station in Athens; the trip is roughly 2 h 15. Buses run several times a day. In Nafplio, local buses reach Tolo and some sites, but Mycenae and Epidaurus are easier on a tour or with a taxi. Check current timetables.
Which is better for a couple?
For a romantic break, Nafplio: lantern-lit lanes, the Bourtzi castle in the bay and sunset from Palamidi or Akti Miaouli. For a city break with museums, bars and more restaurants, Athens. Many couples split a week between them, with the Athens days first and the slower Nafplio days at the end.
