Where to stay in Saranda
Saranda stretches in a steep, dramatic crescent around its natural bay, packed tightly against the coastal hills. Because the entire city climbs sharply upward from the water, choosing where you sleep determines whether you walk to the beach in five minutes or tackle a lung-busting, stair-heavy climb every time you return from dinner. The main commercial strip runs flat along the port, while the southern edges offer quieter residential pockets.

Kodër
This hillside district sits just north of the centre, offering a slightly more residential, laid-back feel while remaining thoroughly connected. You can easily walk down to Mango Beach or the various rocky swimming coves lining Rruga Naim Frashëri in ten minutes. Cafes and small grocery shops dot the neighbourhood streets, providing daily essentials away from the main tourist drag.
Rruga Mitat Hoxha (Port Front)
This is the bustling waterfront promenade curving around the primary ferry terminal and main marina. It buzzes constantly with evening promenaders, clinking glasses from seaside restaurants, and ticket vendors. Everything is right on your doorstep here—including the archaeological ruins of the Forty Saints Monastery trail nearby, the main bus stops, and dozens of seafood tavernas lining the concrete shore.
Centër
Centër encompasses the concrete grid immediately behind the ferry port and town square, centred around Rruga Onhezmi. It is densely packed with supermarkets, fruit stalls, currency exchange booths, and late-night bars. The historic Lekuresi Castle looms on the mountain above, though walking up to it is a serious hike; down below, the gritty municipal beach and ferry docks are just minutes away on foot.

Think twice before booking accommodation in the hills directly above the central bus station or port unless you have a car. The steep, unpaved stairways and relentless uphill climbs become exhausting in the summer heat, and evening noise carries loudly up the concrete bowl from the ferries and clubs.

Common questions
Do I need a car when staying in Saranda?
If you stay right in the centre or along the main waterfront, you do not need a car for daily amenities, as beaches, restaurants, and the ferry terminal are fully walkable. However, a car or local bus is essential if you want to visit nearby Ksamil, Butrint National Park, or secluded beaches further up the coast.
Which area is best for a quiet night's sleep?
The northern residential pockets of Kodër, slightly set back from the main coastal road, tend to be the quietest. Avoid staying directly on Rruga Mitat Hoxha or near the ferry port if you are a light sleeper, as waterfront nightlife, traffic, and early-morning ferry operations generate significant noise throughout the peak summer months.
Are there good sandy beaches within walking distance?
Saranda is primarily characterized by pebbly beaches and concrete platforms rather than wide stretches of sand. Central municipal beaches and the strips in Kodër offer loungers and clear water within a short walk, but if you specifically want fine white sand, you will need to take a short bus or taxi ride south toward Ksamil.
