Where to stay in Recife
Recife is split between its historic coastal islands, river-threaded downtown, and the long southern beach strip. The historical centre holds the monuments, but the city's commercial and tourist infrastructure sits south in Boa Viagem along the Atlantic. You must choose between staying near the ocean with reliable hotels and dining, or staying north closer to historic Olinda and nightlife, bearing in mind traffic between the two zones can be punishing.

Boa Viagem
A dense wall of high-rises fronting an 8-kilometre urban beach with a paved promenade. It is the safest and most convenient hub for tourists, packed with padarias and seafood restaurants. Walk to the Parque Dona Lindu or browse the handicrafts at Praça de Boa Viagem. Note that swimming is restricted due to shark activity.
Pina
Directly north of Boa Viagem, Pina blends classic beachfront high-rises with a slightly more local, transitional edge. Staying along Avenida Boa Viagem here cuts your commute to Recife Antigo in half. You can walk along the sand to the Praia do Pina kiosks or head inland toward RioMar Recife, one of the city's premier shopping malls.
Recife Antigo
Set on an island where the Capibaribe meets the Atlantic, this is the historic colonial heart. It feels cobblestoned and artistic by day, featuring Praça Rio Branco (Marco Zero) and the Caixa Cultural. However, options for lodging are sparse compared to the south, and streets empty out considerably late on weekday nights.
Graças
Located in the Zona Norte along the river, Graças offers tree-lined streets, independent cafes, and historic mansions. It feels entirely local and sophisticated, far from the coastal tourism machine. You can easily walk to the riverside Parque da Jaqueira or explore the bohemian bars lining Rua da Hora in neighbouring Espinheiro.
Setúbal
The southernmost pocket of Boa Viagem, Setúbal has a slower residential rhythm with low-rise buildings mixed between towers. It boasts an exceptional cluster of casual bistros, bakeries, and craft beer bars. You can easily walk to the southern stretch of the boardwalk without the dense crowds found near the central hotel strip.
One thing to think about
Recife Antigo and Santo Antônio empty out drastically on weeknights and Sunday evenings. Unless a major street festival is happening, staying directly downtown leaves you isolated with limited dining options after dark compared to Boa Viagem.
Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Recife are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
Common questions
Can you swim in the ocean at Boa Viagem?
Swimming is strictly regulated due to tiger and bull sharks. Only enter the water during low tide inside the natural reef pools, never venture beyond the reef, and obey all lifeguard warning signs and red flags posted along the sand.
How do I get between Boa Viagem and Recife Antigo?
Rideshare apps like Uber are cheap, reliable, and the safest way to travel the roughly 10 kilometres between the zones. Avoid relying on the metro for this specific route, as stations do not align conveniently with the primary beach hotel areas.
Should I stay in Recife or neighbouring Olinda?
Stay in Recife if you want modern hotels, beach walks, and business amenities. Choose Olinda if you want a bohemian, colonial guesthouse experience with steep cobbled hills, historic churches, and live frevo music, though getting to Recife requires a 30-minute taxi ride.
