Where to stay in Port Douglas
Port Douglas is a compact, linear coastal town defined by the peninsula separating the Coral Sea from the mangroves of Dickson Inlet. Most activity clusters around Macrossan Street, the primary artery. Choosing where to stay is a balance between proximity to Four Mile Beach, the marina for reef excursions, or the quieter residential fringes. Everything is within a 15-minute walk, though bike rentals are the local preference for getting around easily.

Macrossan Street Precinct
This is the sensory center of the town, lined with boutiques, cafes, and open-air bars. You are steps from the reef-trip boats at the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina and the Sunday markets at Anzac Park. The atmosphere is vibrant and social, and you can easily walk to both the beach and the main grocery stores without needing a car.
Four Mile Beach South
This area feels residential and lush, characterized by swaying palms and manicured tropical gardens. It is significantly quieter than the town center, making it ideal for low-key mornings. A paved coastal path connects you to the northern end of the beach, allowing for a breezy 20-minute walk into the village center while enjoying ocean views.
Port Douglas Road Corridor
Located further from the immediate village core, this area features larger, apartment-style complexes and holiday parks. While you lose the ability to walk to dinner in two minutes, the properties here offer better value per square meter. It is a straight, flat 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk to the village center along well-lit paths.
One thing to think about
Avoid booking accommodation solely based on 'beachfront' labels if they are located near the southern end of the beach, as the high-tide mark can swallow the sand entirely. Additionally, avoid renting a car if you plan to stay centrally; parking is scarce and pricey, and the town is perfectly navigable on foot or by local shuttle.
Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Port Douglas are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
Common questions
Do I need to hire a car for my entire stay?
Unless you plan on visiting the Daintree Rainforest or Mossman Gorge independently, you do not need a car. Most reef and wildlife tour operators provide door-to-door hotel transfers. For local transport, the 'Port Douglas Shuttle' runs regular circuits between all major resorts and the village center, making car ownership an unnecessary expense.
Which part of town is best for accessing the Reef boats?
The Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina is located at the edge of the Dickson Inlet. Staying anywhere near Macrossan Street puts you within a 5 to 10-minute walk of the departure docks. This is highly convenient for early morning reef departures, as it eliminates the need for shuttle transfers or finding parking at the busy harbor.
Is Four Mile Beach safe for swimming year-round?
Swimming is excellent, but you must be aware of the 'stinger season' which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you should only swim within the designated stinger-resistant net located at the southern end of the beach, near the Surf Life Saving Club. Always heed the local signage and beach patrol flags.
