Where to stay in Montreux

Montreux is a narrow, linear town compressed between the steep slopes of the Vaud Alps and the shores of Lake Geneva. Because the main train line runs through the center and separates the hills from the waterfront, your location determines your daily uphill climb. Staying near the lake offers direct promenade access, while properties higher up the slope provide panoramic lake views but require navigating significant stairs or steep inclined streets.

Montreux Centre

UpscaleBest for travelers relying on public transport and those who want immediate access to dining and rail connections.

This area puts you at the heart of the activity, located directly beside the Montreux train station and the main pier. The lakeside promenade is steps away, offering a flat, scenic walk to the Casino Barrière. You are surrounded by high-density restaurants and retail shops. It feels bustling and urban, making it the most convenient base for day trips to Chillon Castle.

Territet

Mid-rangeSuits travelers looking for a quieter, historic atmosphere while remaining connected by a short walk or trolleybus ride.

Territet feels like a time capsule of Belle Époque architecture. It is quieter than the town center, featuring grand, aging hotels and lush park spaces. You can walk the promenade all the way into central Montreux in about 15 minutes. It offers a more authentic, residential feel with easier access to the funicular heading up towards Glion for mountain views.

Clarens

Mixed pricesIdeal for those seeking a more local, relaxed pace away from the primary tourist congestion of the town center.

Clarens is technically a separate commune but seamlessly flows into Montreux. It features local beaches and more residential quietude. While you lose the immediate proximity to the major train station, the lakeside walk remains exceptionally pleasant and leads directly into the tourist hub within 20 minutes. It feels less like a hotel district and more like a Swiss lakeside village.

One thing to think about

Avoid booking accommodation directly adjacent to the main railway tracks or the busy Grand-Rue if you are a light sleeper. The trains run frequently throughout the day, and the main road carries heavy vehicular traffic, creating consistent noise that penetrates older, less insulated buildings.

Common questions

Is it worth staying in the hills like Glion or Caux?

Stay in the hills only if you have a car or want a retreat from the town. You will gain incredible, elevated views of Lake Geneva, but you will be entirely dependent on the funicular or taxi to reach the waterfront. It limits your spontaneity for evening dining in town.

Do I need a car to get around Montreux?

You absolutely do not need a car. Montreux is highly walkable, and the Vaudois Riviera benefits from an excellent network of trains, buses, and lake steamers. A car becomes a liability due to limited parking and high costs. Use the local transport pass provided by most hotels instead.

Is the Montreux Jazz Festival area good for general lodging?

If you visit during the festival, staying near the 2m2c convention center is intense. It is loud, crowded, and expensive. If you are not there specifically for the music, stay further out in Territet or Clarens to ensure you can actually enjoy the lakeside peace and quiet during your stay.
