Where to stay in Durban
Durban is South Africa's third-largest city, on the warm Indian Ocean coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Its long beachfront promenade, the Golden Mile, runs north from the harbour, and the leafy suburbs on the Berea ridge and the coastal town of Umhlanga to the north are where many visitors prefer to stay.

Umhlanga
Umhlanga Rocks, about 20 kilometres north of the centre, has a lighthouse, a beach promenade, upscale hotels and the Gateway shopping centre. It is the most popular base for visitors, with good restaurants and easy access to King Shaka airport.
Golden Mile and the beachfront
Hotels along the beachfront face the promenade, surf beaches and piers. uShaka Marine World is at the southern end, near the Point waterfront. The promenade is busy with cyclists and walkers. Be more careful after dark and use taxis at night.
Morningside and Berea
On the hill above the city, Morningside has guesthouses, the restaurants of Florida Road and the Durban Botanic Gardens nearby. It is quieter and greener, with views over the city, and a short drive from the beaches.
One thing to think about
Choose secure accommodation and use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than walking at night, especially around the central business district. Check how far your hotel is from the beach and from the airport, which is north of the city.
Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Durban are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
Common questions
Is Durban good for swimming?
Yes. The Indian Ocean here is warm for much of the year, and the main beaches are protected by shark nets and patrolled by lifeguards. Swim between the flags. Durban is also one of South Africa's best-known surf cities, with beginner-friendly breaks along the Golden Mile.
How far is King Shaka airport from Durban?
King Shaka International Airport is about 35 kilometres north of central Durban and about 15 kilometres from Umhlanga. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and shuttles connect it with the city. That is one reason why Umhlanga is a convenient base for short stays.
What are the best day trips from Durban?
Popular trips include the Valley of a Thousand Hills, the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi game reserve and iSimangaliso Wetland Park further north, and the Drakensberg mountains inland. Many visitors also enjoy Durban's Indian heritage, with markets and famous bunny chow curry.
