Where to stay in Dakar

Dakar sits on the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Africa, with the Atlantic on three sides. The busy downtown Plateau is the business centre, while most visitors prefer the coastal districts of Almadies and Ngor in the northwest, with ocean views, surf and restaurants, and Gorée Island lies a short ferry ride offshore.

Dakar

Plateau (downtown)

Mixed pricesBusiness travellers and those who want markets, museums and the Gorée ferry.

The Plateau is the colonial-era centre, with Independence Square, the Kermel and Sandaga markets, the Museum of Black Civilisations and the ferry terminal for Gorée Island. It is busy and practical by day, but quieter at night than the coast.

Almadies

UpscaleCouples and travellers who want ocean views, restaurants and nightlife.

At the western tip of the peninsula, Almadies has upscale hotels, seafood restaurants on the rocks, bars and surf spots. Sunset over the Atlantic is the main event. It is the most comfortable area, though a taxi ride from the downtown sights.

Ngor and Ngor Island

Mid-rangeSurfers and travellers who want a relaxed, village-like stay.

Ngor village faces the small Ngor Island, reached by a short pirogue ride, with beaches and simple restaurants. Surf camps and guesthouses are common, and the Ngor Right is a famous wave. It feels laid-back but is close to Almadies.

Gorée Island

Mid-rangeHistory lovers who want a quiet night away from traffic.

Gorée, with its colourful colonial houses and the House of Slaves museum, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A few small guesthouses let you stay after the day visitors leave, when the car-free island is peaceful. The ferry runs regularly to the Plateau.

One thing to think about

Dakar's traffic is heavy, and the new airport (Blaise Diagne) is about an hour from the city, so plan airport transfers with time to spare. Choose your base by what you will do most: downtown sights or the coast.

Once you have a bed

The things that sell out first in Dakar are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.

Common questions

How far is Dakar airport from the city?

Blaise Diagne International Airport is about 45 to 60 kilometres from central Dakar. Allow at least an hour by taxi or shuttle, and more at rush hour. A toll motorway and an airport bus service link it to the city, and many hotels can arrange transfers.

How do I visit Gorée Island?

Ferries leave from the port in the Plateau district and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. The island is small and car-free, with the House of Slaves, museums, art and cafes. Most people spend half a day there, but staying overnight is quiet and atmospheric.

Where can I surf in Dakar?

Ngor and Almadies have the best-known surf spots, including the Ngor Right off Ngor Island, and several surf schools and camps. Waves work for much of the year, with the biggest swells in the northern hemisphere winter. Beginners find gentler breaks along the coast.
