Is Split safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Split is a safe city with low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowded summer streets, noisy and rowdy nightlife and heat. Most visitors have no problems.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
In the palace's narrow streets, on the Riva and at the ferry port in summer. Keep bags closed.
Nightlife rowdiness
Summer nights in the palace and at Bačvice can be loud; fines apply for drinking in public spaces and walking around without a shirt in the centre.
Heat
July–August highs of 31–32°C; carry water and use sunscreen.
Sea urchins and rocks
Wear water shoes on rocky beaches.
Areas and times to take care
The palace, Riva, Varoš and Marjan are safe day and night. Bačvice beach is lively at night; watch your belongings. Football matches involving Hajduk Split can be intense near the stadium.
Getting around safely
Taxis and Uber/Bolt are widely available. Local buses are safe. Catamarans and ferries are reliable but busy in summer; book ahead.
Solo and women travellers
Split is comfortable for solo women. Usual nightlife precautions apply at Bačvice and palace bars in summer. Use taxis or apps late at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe. The sun is strong in summer; use sunscreen and avoid the midday heat. EU visitors should carry an EHIC or GHIC card.
