Is Bucharest safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Bucharest is generally a safe city for visitors, with low levels of violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in the Old Town and on crowded buses, unofficial taxis at the airport and Gara de Nord, and inflated bills in some Old Town bars. Stray dogs, once a well-known problem, are now rarely seen in the centre.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Most common in the Old Town (Lipscani), at Gara de Nord and on crowded buses and trams; keep phones and wallets in front pockets or a zipped bag.
Unofficial taxis
Drivers approaching you at the airport or station may overcharge; use Bolt, Uber or the official taxi touchscreens.
Bar bill scams
Some Old Town bars use hostesses to bring tourists in and then charge inflated prices; check the menu and the bill.
Traffic
Drivers can be fast and aggressive; cross at lights and watch for cars turning.
Summer heat
July and August often reach 33–38°C; carry water and plan indoor visits at midday.
Areas and times to take care
The centre, Old Town, Calea Victoriei and the northern districts are fine day and night, though the Old Town's main streets get loud and drunken on weekend nights. Around Gara de Nord, take more care at night and keep an eye on your bags.
Getting around safely
Bolt and Uber are widely used and inexpensive, and are the easiest option at night. The metro is fast and cheap; tap a contactless card at the gates. Avoid unmarked taxis and drivers who approach you at arrivals.
Solo and women travellers
Women travelling alone generally find Bucharest comfortable. Usual city precautions apply: use ride-hailing late at night, watch your drink in busy Old Town bars and stay in well-lit central areas.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is treated and generally considered safe, though many locals prefer bottled. Summer heat can be intense; winters are often below freezing. Pharmacies are common and well stocked.
