How to get from Thassos to Thessaloniki
Thassos is an island, so the trip to Thessaloniki starts with a ferry: Limenas to Keramoti (about 40 minutes) or Prinos to Kavala (about 1 h 15). From there it is about 2 h by car or KTEL bus on the Egnatia Odos, so the whole journey takes roughly 3 h 30 to 4 h 30.
Best option: Ferry. The short car ferry from Limenas to Keramoti runs often all day and is the quickest way off the island, with buses or the motorway onward.
All the ways to make the trip
| How | Time | How often | Price* | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ferry Car ferries from Limenas (Thassos town) to Keramoti, or from Prinos to Kavala (several ferry companies) | about 40 min (Keramoti) or about 1 h 15 (Kavala) | Keramoti: roughly every 30–60 min in summer; Kavala: several a day | about €2–5 per person, plus about €15–25 for a car | Check current timetables; winter departures are fewer, especially to Kavala. |
| bus From Kavala, KTEL buses to Thessaloniki's Makedonia bus station (from Keramoti, a local bus or taxi to Kavala first) | about 2 h from Kavala | roughly hourly | about €15–18 | Kavala's bus station is near the port, which makes the Prinos–Kavala ferry convenient without a car. |
| car Ferry with the car, then the A2 Egnatia Odos motorway to Thessaloniki | about 2 h from Keramoti or Kavala | fuel plus Egnatia tolls of a few euros | Thessaloniki's centre is congested; park at your hotel or a garage. |

Tips
- Without a car, the Prinos–Kavala ferry lands near Kavala's KTEL station; from Keramoti you need extra transport.
- Kavala's airport is near Keramoti if you are flying out instead.
- In August, queue early for car ferries on Sunday afternoons.
- Buy ferry tickets at the port kiosks; they are not usually needed in advance.
Common questions
Is there a direct ferry from Thassos to Thessaloniki?
No. Ferries from Thassos go only to the mainland ports of Keramoti and Kavala. From either, you continue by car or KTEL bus to Thessaloniki, about two hours on the Egnatia Odos. The whole trip usually takes 3 h 30 to 4 h 30.
What is the best way without a car?
Take the ferry from Prinos to Kavala, about 1 h 15, then a KTEL bus from Kavala to Thessaloniki, about two hours. Kavala's bus station is close to the port. Alternatively cross to Keramoti and take a local bus or taxi to Kavala, which adds time.
Can I do Thessaloniki as a day trip from Thassos?
It is not practical. Travel takes at least 3 h 30 each way, leaving little time in the city, and the last ferries back to the island can be early outside summer. Plan at least one night in Thessaloniki, or more to see the waterfront and the Byzantine churches.
Do I need to book the ferry ahead?
Usually not. Tickets are sold at the ports shortly before departure and the Keramoti route runs frequently. In August and on summer weekends, car queues can be long, so arrive early. Check winter timetables, as fewer boats run then, particularly on the Kavala route.
