Tips
- On the Circumvesuviana, board at Porta Nolana for a better chance of a seat.
- From the airport, the Curreri bus is easier than going into Naples to catch the train.
- Hydrofoils fill up on summer weekends; buy tickets early at Molo Beverello or online.
- If you plan to continue to the Amalfi Coast, SITA buses leave from outside Sorrento station.
Common questions
Is the train or ferry better from Naples to Sorrento?
The hydrofoil is faster (about 40 minutes), more comfortable and offers views of the bay, but costs about €15–20 and depends on the weather. The Circumvesuviana train takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and costs around €4–5, but is often crowded and has no luggage space. With suitcases, most people prefer the boat or the airport bus.
Can I get from Naples airport to Sorrento directly?
Yes. Curreri runs direct buses from Naples Capodichino airport to Sorrento, taking about 1 hour 15 minutes for roughly €10–15. Otherwise take the Alibus to Naples Garibaldi or the port and continue by Circumvesuviana or hydrofoil. Private transfers cost more but go door to door.
Do ferries run all year?
Hydrofoils between Naples and Sorrento run most of the year, but winter timetables are much thinner and rough seas can cancel sailings. Summer has the most departures. Check current timetables before travelling, especially from November to March, and keep the train as a backup.
Is it worth driving to Sorrento?
Usually not for a short stay. The coastal road is slow and congested in summer, and parking in Sorrento is limited and costs about €2–4 per hour. A car helps only if you plan to explore inland villages or the Amalfi Coast outside peak season. Many visitors leave the car in Naples and use trains, buses and boats.
