Tips

Common questions

How long is the bus from Mendoza to Santiago?

About 6–8 hours, depending on the border wait at the Los Libertadores crossing, which can take a long time in summer and on holiday weekends. Buses run many times a day in good weather. Fares are roughly US$30–60. Buy tickets at the Mendoza terminal or online a few days ahead.

Is the pass between Mendoza and Santiago open in winter?

Usually, but heavy snow can close the Cristo Redentor pass for hours or several days between about June and September. When it closes, buses do not run and there is no alternative road nearby. Check the pass status before travelling in winter, and consider flying if your dates are tight.

What can I not bring into Chile from Mendoza?

Chile has strict agricultural controls. Do not bring fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, honey or seeds; bags are scanned at the border, and undeclared items can lead to fines. Declare anything you are unsure about on the form. Wine in sealed bottles is generally allowed within personal limits.

Can I drive a rental car from Mendoza to Santiago?

Yes, if the rental company gives written permission and the necessary documents for crossing into Chile, which usually costs extra. Arrange this well ahead. The road is good but high and winding, with the Los Caracoles hairpins on the Chilean side. Carry chains in winter if required.
